Please advise beforehand of any special dietary requirements so that they are able to meet these during your stay. The Outpost offers a variety of places to dine. Breakfast is served under cover in the dining area in the main building with views of the Luvuvhu River Valley. Lunch is served in the dining area and dinner is either eaten in the enclosed courtyard under the stars or on the deck next to the pool.

This area leads off to the swimming pool deck with large lap pool.

Activities

The region measures some 28 000 hectares and is home to large herds of elephant and buffalo. The mountainous terrain is attractive to leopard and the region has resident prides of lion. Rhino were recently reintroduced and guests visiting The Outpost are likely to see various fauna and flora endemic to this remote corner of the Kruger National Park. The diverse terrain of the region includes mopane woodlands, fever tree forests, acacia thickets and some of the largest and oldest baobab trees.
Game drives and walks
Guests will be taken on game excursions in the early morning and again in the late afternoon which may extend into the early evening. Game drives are conducted by qualified and experienced guides in open-air four wheel-drive vehicles. Game excursions are not restricted to public roads in Kruger National Park and mostly make use of tracks formerly reserved for the use of Park officials. Bush walks can be arranged, however there is a requiry for you to give at least two weeks notice prior to arrival.

The Makuleke Region was occupied by the Makuleke Community for some 140 years prior to their forced removal in 1969 under the apartheid policies of the previous government. After South Africa returned to democracy in the 1990's, the Makuleke's lodged a successful land claim resulting in the return of their land. This return was conditional on the land being used only for ecotourism and subject to the environmental management of Kruger National Park.
The Makuleke Community then awarded a 30 year concession to The Outpost. A true community lodge, the Outpost was built with a labour force provided by the Community. The Outpost now operates with staff drawn almost entirely from the Community. The Outpost pays 8% of its turnover to the Community as a concession rental and a further 2% of its turnover is paid to a Trust formed for the benefit and welfare of the Community. At the end of the 30 year period, the entire lodge is returned to the Community, the objective being for community members to have obtained the necessary skills to operate The Outpost for their own benefit.
This arrangement represents one of the most advanced integrated conservation and sustainable development models in the world and provides real ownership and control to the Makuleke Community.

Rhino Post Safari Lodge

The lodge is situated at the southern end of our 12,000 hectare private wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park.

This private wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park shares a 15km unfenced boundary with the famous Mala Mala and Sabi Sand reserve with an abundance of wildlife moving freely between the two reserves. The concession is noted as an excellent game viewing area with encounters with the Big Five and good sightings can be expected.

Set on the banks of the Mutlumuvi riverbed is our luxurious trails base lodge. From here guests can travel to Plains Camp for walking safaris, as well as overnighting under the stars at our unique Sleepouts. Rhino Post Safari Lodge is an elegant 16 bed lodge from where we embark on our twice daily game drives. As well as making use of our private concession roads we have exclusive use of some of the Kruger National Parks public roads for evening game drives, well after gate closing times (sunset), ensuring guests an unforgettable experience.

Rhino Post Safari Lodge offers both early morning and evening games drives. Game drive safaris are conducted in specially adapted open Landcruisers, with professional guides. To preserve our wilderness concession, no off-roading is practiced.

In addition to driving on our 12,000 hectare concession, we have exclusive use of some of the Kruger National Park public roads at night. SANparks has allowed us the added advantage of being able to utilise 170km of Park roads after gate closing time - when all the self drive tourists have left and when the other concessions have to be back on their own property.

A typical day would include an early start, a cup of fresh coffee or tea, after which guests set out on their game drive. Guides at the lodge meet the stringent requirements of the South African National Parks and senior guides hold the highest guiding qualifications possible in South Africa, to ensure that your encounters with the African wilderness are exciting, informative and safe.

In the late afternoon after a delicious high tea, you can enjoy an evening game drive, winding down with Sundowners, watching an African sunset and spotting nocturnal animals in the Park.

Sleep outs - Unrivalled wilderness experience

Rhino Post Safari Lodge is unique in offering this unrivalled overnight bush experience in the heart of the Kruger Park.

All Sleep Outs must be arranged during the reservation process. Sleep Outs can be enjoyed from Rhino Post, however if less than 4 people are attending a surcharge is applicable.

When embarking on a Sleep Out from Rhino Post you will depart on your afternoon drive after high tea and eventually before the sun sets you will arrive at the Sleep Outs. After being orientated around the structure you will choose your platforms and the guide will light a cooking fire.

The Sleep Out platforms overlook a waterhole where you will enjoy the Sunset whilst sipping a refreshing sundowner While your guide prepares a traditional South African braai on an open fire, you can relax and enjoy the sounds and senses of the African Bush as night settles..

After dinner you will retire to your individual platform and enjoy sleeping under the star studded sky – your experience heightened as you share the wilderness at night, while safely guarded by our observant guides.

The rumble of the elephant passing by or the roar of the lion at the nearby waterhole, are the only noises that might disturb guests in this peaceful wilderness. The following morning, guests will enjoy a light snack after which they will depart back to Rhino Post for a hearty brunch.

The Sleep Outs are highly dependent on weather conditions. PLEASE be aware that should the weather be unfavourable on the day of the Sleep Out (heavy rain) or if there has been heavy rain in the days preceding the Sleep Out, guests may have to remain at Rhino Post due to the platforms being inaccessible.

Amenities & Facilities

Lukimbi Safari Lodge is a stunning luxury safari lodge situated in the easily accessible southern portion of the Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Lukimbi Safari Lodge is a stunning luxury safari lodge situated in the easily accessible southern portion of the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Kruger is home to the Big Five and a wide variety of other animals and birds, which roam freely in their natural habitat. The lodge features carved plaster panels showing intricate mystical creatures and African patterns, in a subtle yet extremely decorative way. The main buildings are linked together with open wooden decks, making the most of the view, as the lodge meanders along the banks of the river Lwakahle.

The designer interior combines colours and specially created pieces artistically and imaginatively. There is something different and interesting to look at round every corner. Lukimbi is a photographers’ delight, both inside the surrounds of the lodge and out in the beckoning bush. The height of the lodge above the river provides viewing points with a feeling of safety. The raised walkways provide guests with clear and easy access to their suites.

Classic Suites
Guests walking into the classic suites are struck immediately by the sense of space. The room seems to stretch into the bush beyond, and the high windows bring the sky and the trees right into the room. The lounge drops down from the level of the bedroom area and the space flows out to the covered deck, a comfortable area to sip a drink, watch the passing animals and birds and just relax. The bathroom is large and also looks directly onto the bush. Each suite has a spacious bath, inside and outside shower and separate toilet. All have air-conditioning, fan, safe, gauzy, romantic mosquito nets, tea and coffee facilities and a mini bar. These rooms are large enough to share with young children and still enjoy the space.

Whether chosen by honeymooners or by discerning guests wanting a little more luxury, the Premier suites are an ideal choice.

Game Drives go out in the early morning and late afternoons in open Landrovers. The Guides love to share their extensive knowledge, and work closely with Shangaan trackers to get the best sightings. There is great communication between the two and the Trackers are encouraged to share their knowledge of local uses of herbs and trees, animals and birds. Lukimbi can follow the Big 5 off road in careful, controlled circumstances, this is an experience few guests would like to miss. Guests are able to get really close to the animals and experience truly fantastic photographic opportunities. Early mornings start off a little cold, but a stop is made later for warming drinks, or cold ones, if preferred. A highlight of late afternoon drives is the time spent at sundowner time. This is the moment to appreciate the magnificence of an African sunset, whilst sipping sundowner drinks.

Lukimbi is the place to enjoy wonderful walks, because it is so large and unspoiled. It is quite a different experience to see animals on foot and always very exciting. The walks offer the opportunity to look at and learn about the smaller things and just to appreciate the special smell of the African bush, listening to the calls of the many species of birds. Walks are generally taken after breakfast and guests are always accompanied by an armed Ranger.

Lukimbi Lodge is proud to introduce Full Day Walking Trails during the cooler winter months. Anybody who is reasonably fit and healthy, and is looking for something adventurous will certainly enjoy "bushwacking" on foot. There are emergency evacuation points along the route if there is any kind of problem. The Wagon Trail, the Lwakahle Trail and the Gabro Trail depart at approx 07h00 and guests will return back to camp around 17h00.

Lukimbi can take a maximum of 8 guests, from 16+ years on a walk. Guests do need to request the full day walk at time of reservation, as it is subject to availability and there is a huge amount of logistics involved. There is an additional charge of R550.00 per person per walk. If you love to walk, but not too keen on roughing it, the walks provide the best combination of exercise, fresh air, fabulous game viewing, all done in complete comfort, with rangers who clearly love the whole experience.

Fine Dining - Lukimbi has already created a name for itself as one of the new places to enjoy top cuisine. Meals both unusual and beautifully presented add to the whole enjoyable Lukimbi experience. Part of the fun is the changing of venues, so guests may enjoy breakfast in the bush, lunch round the pool and a glamourous candlelit dinner on the wooden decks. Maybe dinner will be in the amazing and mythical boma (or meeting place), an experience you won't forget, or perhaps the chefs will decide to do something completely different. The bar is a great pre-dinner gathering place to exchange game spotting stories, hear Shangaan tales and to sip cockails.

Wine Choice - The Multi-Award winning cellar provides a wonderful choice of wines. To accompany fine dining, guests are invited to select the best of South African wines, including many of the smaller and upcoming Estates.

Spa Treatments - Lukimbi will gladly arrange Spa Treatments on request.

Golf - Guests staying at Lukimbi are permitted to play golf at the nearby prestigious Leopard Creek Country Club. Designed by Gary Player, this is one of South Africa’s best known golf courses and only guests from a few select establishments can play there. Transfers to and from Leopard Creek can be arranged and the transfer time is only a 45 minute drive through the Kruger Park. Reservations need to be made in advance through the Reservations office.

Swimming - It is generally warm enough to swim 10 months of the year, the very brave will use the pools all year round. The main pool has a refreshing waterfall and a spectacular view of the bush and river bed.

A very well equipped gym is available. It looks directly out onto the river frontage, so not a moment's game viewing need be lost.

The library has many interesting books, whether it is fact or fiction guests prefer. A computer station is available for sending emails to the family or office.

The well stocked curio shop features South African artistic creations, as well as interesting clothes and curios.
Wildlife Talks and Displays

Rangers generally have a special field of interest and are keen to give talks on their chosen subject. Talks are also given on the culture of the local communities. The Rangers have set up a small museum in their office and guests are encouraged to wander through and discuss the exhibits.

TV viewing is not seen as an important activity on our lodge, but one is available to view important sports or news events. Children's videos are available in the children’s playroom.

Kids Programme

For children under 12, babysitting is available from 07h00.
The Safari Play room is available from 08h00 - 13h00 and again during the evening game drives (16h15 - 19h30).
A supervisor is present at all times. Safari beds and cots are available on request.

Activities include:

* Game drives
* bushwalks
* casting tracks
* arts and crafts
* treasure hunts
* interactive sessions with rangers
* special boma dinners
* kids dinners and picnics.
All children love to swim: for the younger ones there is a special shallow kids pool. The older ones will enjoy the water flowing across the rocks, until it drops into a waterfall. There they can enjoy the adventure of sitting behind the cascading water. Then there is the main area and if they are lucky, they will be able to watch elephants drinking from the pools in the river bed nearby. Families with children under 8 years must reserve their own private vehicle.
Rates for child minding and private Landrover are available on request. Unfortunately, no children under 2 are accepted.

Wildlife Experience

Lukimbi Safari Lodge is situated in the game rich, southern section of the world renowned Kruger National Park. Bounded by 3 major river systems, the extensive 15 000 hectare area offers a diverse array of habitats. The vast grasslands dominate the northern portion, whereas the southern and central areas are more heavily wooded and interspersed with lush riverine thickets. This provides ideal habitat for large herds of zebra, wildebeest and other plains animals. The white rhino enjoy the numerous pans and wallows, whilst the shyer and more elusive black rhino can be found in the more thickly wooded areas. Herds of buffalo roam through grasslands seeking the succulent grasses, before moving down to rivers to amble slowly through the reeds. Elephants can frequently be seen all over the concession and in the river in front of the lodge is a favourite place for them to spend hours at a time. Guests relaxing at the lodge pools can find themselves enthralled, watching elephant families equally enjoying their own pools, particularly if the families include endearing babies. Where you find animals, you find the predators. Tracking lions in open vehicles is one of the most exciting things to do and guests will never forget the spine chilling and awesome sound of a lion roaring at close quarters. Leopards are also found at Lukimbi, more difficult to spot, but guests are rewarded with the sight of one of the most beautiful animals in the world.

During daily walks, Field Guides will fascinate guests with information on the smaller reptiles and insects, which they might have missed on drives. Inquisitive giraffe frequently amuse guests on walks, as they watch the guests watching them, their long, luxuriant eyelashes never failing to charm. Lukimbi is a birders’ paradise, as there are over 420 species of birds to be found.

Special Precautions

Lukimbi is in a malaria risk area and therefore all beds are covered by mosquito nets. Each suite is provided with insect repellent, which should be used especially in the evenings. It is necessary that you consult a doctor before visiting any such area.
Guests often forget the strength of the African sun, so please make sure that you wear a high factor sunscreen and hat and make sure you don't lie outside in the sun for too long.
