Amenities & Facilities
Set amidst the treetops of an age-old indigenous forest, Tsala is a lavish celebration of the spirit of Africa.
Set amidst the treetops of an age-old indigenous forest, Tsala is a lavish celebration of the spirit of Africa. Emulating the monumental ruins of an ancient central African civilisation, the impressive stone-masonry entrance flanked by water features leads into a magnificent foyer supported by polished Blackwood columns. The afro-baroque décor with its earthy colours, rich textures and handcrafted fittings draws inspiration from the diverse cultures of Africa, yet remains integrated with the sophistication of the Western world. Whether from the exotically appointed dining room, the intimate glassed-in lounge, or the large open decks high above the forest floor, the views are all breathtakingly beautiful, encompassing lush forests extending across rolling valleys towards distant hills. Tsala effortlessly achieves the perfect balance between nature and voluptuous luxury - tucked into the forest canopy.
Elevated wooden walkways meander through the trees providing easy access between the main lodge and guest suites. Experience the restful tranquillity of the forest while the discreet staff provides impeccable and personalised service. The main restaurant building along the end of the walkway leads to the voluminous reception area, an inspirational viewpoint on arrival at the lodge, with the forest as the backdrop. The lounge area has become a firm favourite among the guests while enjoying a pre – cocktail drink relaxing with a book from the library or while checking e mails through the Wi-Fi facility located in this area. An outside deck invitingly lures the guests to peek at the cavorting Knysna Loeries, known to be very elusive. Dine al fresco style on the deck overlooking the forest where lunches and group dinners with friends can be served during good weather conditions and if you wish you may choose your own local and international wines from the world renowned underground wine cellar. Tsala has complimentary Wi-Fi in all public areas.
During summer, light clothing with a selection of warmer items for cooler evenings may be required as the forest is cooler than the surrounding Plettenberg Bay area. Winter months are normally colder at nights and warming up during the course of the day, with rainy days a possibility. Warm layered clothing is suggested for comfort while, should it rain, umbrellas are provided at Hunter’s during your stay. Sunscreen application with a high factor during the summer months is advisable, caps and hats should be worn outdoors and especially around the pool area as the days can get hot – but are mostly dry. During the evenings and at dinner time, smart casual is the general accepted attire, while formal evenings will be dependant on the occasion or celebratory tone of the evening. The Summer House is a relaxing area for the entire family and is a more informal venue. Walking shoes for exploration in the surrounding forest is advisable and general sporting equipment can be stored at the hotel by arrangement.

Apart from the African inspiration seen in the architecture and manifested in the use of the natural materials in the building, there is a global tribal inspiration drawn from the beautiful carving and metalwork of India and the patterns of the tribal Suzani textiles. Subtle texture forms the canvas on the walls- with subtle contrasts brought in by the combination of the stone masonry, raw scratch plaster, rough neutral Earthcote and waxed plaster that has the feel of old smooth leather. Handmade mud chandeliers preside in the interior– with the clay balls brought to life by the subtle sparkle of crystal. The fabrics- raw textured natural fibres - in combinations of wheat, stone, ebony and slate colours forms the foundation, hand printed Suzani fabrics, worn leather and soft suede, fun lizard print silver fabrics bring a sense of fun and “now” and luscious velvets a sense of opulence, with a shot of silver leather for luxury. The furniture is all custom made - all slightly oversized as comfort is key at Zinzi. Whether sitting around a low table on ottomans and cushions sharing a meze platter or on a wingback chair at an antique table with turned legs and a pewter chandelier - absolute relaxation is guaranteed. The tables provide for ample space, with fabulous dishes beautifully displayed during each course.
